My father passed away in August, 2021...

It's difficult to lose a parent at any age. I am grown now with children of my own, but his passing has brought me back to feeling as if I were a child. At his funeral, I got a chance to see my relatives, and it put me in a reflective state, memories of spending time with my father and growing up in New Mexico.

I remember my early years with my father...

I grew up in Albuquerque, but we lived in on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation near Dulce, New Mexico until I was about 5 years old. Later, my father bought a little piece of land in Tierra Amarilla and we would spend time there on weekends and in the summer. A neighbor let me borrow his horse and I spent hours riding in the forest and valleys, usually letting the horse take me where he wanted to go. My father would take me fishing for trout and catfish at the nearby lakes and streams. We would set out at dawn, just as the sun began to rise over the mountains and share sandwiches, making balls of dough out of the bread to attract the fish. It was a very peaceful time during my childhood.

I grew up and moved to the city...

After I graduated from high school, I moved to Chicago to study music at a conservatory. Later, I moved to New York City and the city got into my blood and I never left. But I always kept the memories of growing up in New Mexico with me.

I decided to paint a collection for my father

After my father passed away, I wanted to find a way to honor him, to remember him, to send a message to him that I loved him and that I appreciate all that he did for me. I'm currently working on a 20-piece collection called "Remembering New Mexico." The paintings will have a Southwestern theme and subject will be things that I remember from growing up in New Mexico.
